Santa Maria Teens Play Urban Style Drums

The City of Santa Maria is offering a two week camp session that will allow teenagers

SANTA MARIA, CALIF. - Over the next 2 weeks, Santa Maria teenagers will have the opportunity to discover their musical talent with drums at Maramonte Community Center off Sunrise Drive.

The summer program – put on by the city's recreation and parks department – is called Pacific Drum Camp.

Mya Hair has been playing drums for 2 years. She is excited to advance her musical techniques and says her mom "was offering to let [her] do it and she doesn't do that often."

"We all equal, we are all people, we all have stuff to learn," is what Hair said in response to KCOY when asked about being the only girl in the camp.

The students are learning from Kyle Batty, who has been playing drums for more than two decades.

Batty is happy the city is offering this program because it gives kids the opportunity "to get off the couch with video games and get exposed to an instrument." He hopes that drums will give the kids he teaches purpose in life.

Session II for Pacific Drum Camp will start Monday, July 28. The registration fees are $50 for Santa Maria residents and $60 for non-Santa Maria residents.
