Passengers Stop Bus After Driver Suffers Heart Attack

SANTA MARIA, Calif. - Two passengers jumped into action Friday morning when the driver of their Amtrak bus slumped over the wheel.

The bus was traveling northbound on Highway 101 at the Santa Maria River Bridge when passengers, sitting in the front row, noticed the driver slump and go unconscious.

California Highway Patrol officials said the driver was a 42-year-old Los Osos man.

Santa Maria Fire officials say the two passengers removed the driver from the seat and slowed the bus to a safe stop on the right side of the highway after hitting the center divider of the bridge.

CHP officers performed CPR but were unable to revive the driver who was declared dead at the scene.

Officers say only one of the 9 passengers on the bus complained of an injury.

The bus was headed to Hanford, Calif., from Santa Maria.
