Local Mom of 10 Featured in National Fitness Calendar

ATASCADERO, Calif. - For many, the new year means a new you. A time to start fresh and ditch any bad habits. Every year one of the top New Year's resolutions is to get healthier.

One Atascadero mom was able to transform her life through fitness before 2014, while raising her 10 children.

It's a picture that grabbed national attention. Sacramento mom, Maria Kang posing with her 3 young boys, showing her midriff asking, "what's your excuse?"

"Loved how she was out to inspire and encourage moms," said Atascadero mother, Esther DeVries.

Atascadero mom of ten, Esther DeVries, took Maria's motto and ran.

"My 20 year-old son likes to call us the freak show," laughed DeVries.

The single mom of six boys and four girls, the oldest being 24, the youngest 5 year old twin boys, says she constantly struggled with her weight.

"My highest weight was at 232," said, DeVries.

Esther's journey started last year.

"My family had always run. I always wanted to do that with them, never was able to," she explained.

Within months, she finished her first 10K and two half marathons. For fun, Esther signed up for a fit mom swim suit calendar, created by Maria Kang. A competition for mom's throughout the country.

"I'm extremely proud of her," said DeVries daughter, Hailee.

Days later, Esther got the call she had been chosen as Miss January.

"There's no way. This is impossible. It was shocking," reacted DeVries.

After the calendar pictures were posted on Yahoo, she was hit with yet another obstacle.

"People that didn't know me were accusing me of having several baby daddies because of the amount of children that I have. No validation for any of things that were being said," said DeVries.

Esther says the comments aren't stopping her.

"It feels like I''m living somebody else's life. It's very surreal," said DeVries.

The calendar is expected to be released on January 7.

The calendar is $11.99 and proceeds benefits a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, Fitness without Borders (www.fitnesswithoutborders.org) and building free No Excuse Mom Groups (www.noexcusemom.com)
