ISLA VISTA, Calif. - Santa Barbara County Superivsor Doreen Farr released the following statement about funding for an Isla Vista street lighting project:
Third District Supervisor Doreen Farr secured $85,000 at today's (Wednesday's) budget hearing to complete the final of three phases for the Isla Vista lighting project. This phase will include new LED lighting on Camino Corto, Estero Rd, Camino Majorca and other areas.
The impetus for this project began when student leaders at UCSB Associated Students and Supervisor Farr met to discuss the need to improve lighting and safety in Isla Vista two years ago. With Farr's guidance, County Public Works and Southern California Edison developed a comprehensive plan to improve and augment lighting throughout the entire Isla Vista community.
Since the Isla Vista Street LED Lighting Project was launched, approximately 155 street lights have been retrofitted throughout Isla Vista and an additional 39 new light poles will be installed in the coming year. The total project cost is $638,000. Over half of the funding came from Federal Community Development Block Grants.
In addition, Supervisor Farr collaborated with UCSB to obtain their agreement to allocate over $200,000 in additional funds for this project.
Supervisor Farr stated, "The safety of Isla Vista residents is a very high priority for me. I am extremely happy the Board approved the additional funding to complete this important project."
With full funding now secured, the project should be complete in the Spring of 2015.
