SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - UCSB announced on Wednesday that all Gaucho athletes for the remainder of the year will wear an "NJ" patch in memory of Gauchos water polo player Nick Johnson, who died on Monday.
The 19-year-old was working out at his alma mater, Santa Barbara High School, when the accident happened. Other swimmers at the school found Johnson at the bottom of the pool before pulling him out and performing CPR. Johnson was later pronounced dead at Cottage hospital.
Friday will be the first day that fans will see the patch worn by UCSB athletes. The baseball team will hit the diamond with the "NJ" patch on their uniform.
The Santa Barbara sheriff's department confirmed that the preliminary finding in the cause of death was "Accidental Drowning" pending toxicological results which usually take two weeks.
The Santa Barbara High School Aquatics Booster Club, at the request of the Johnson family, has placed a link on its website for the SBHS community to donate to the Nick Johnson Memorial Fund. This fund will be used to honor Johnson, and carry on his legacy while supporting the SBHS aquatics program. To donate, please visit http://www.sbhsaquatics.com/
