Dos Pueblos Engineering Academy Shines In NOVA Documentary

"School of the Future" program profiles DPEA grad

GOLETA, Calif. - Students, parents and community members anxiously filled Elings Performing Arts Center on Wednesday night to watch Dos Pueblos Engineering Academy students in a new NOVA:School of the Future documentary.

Others watched from home on PBS SoCal.

The two-hour program covered socioeconomic issues and solutions in public schools.  The last 15 minutes showcased the success of the Dos Pueblos Engineering Academy known as DPEA in Goleta.

Crews from the popular science series videoed students at the high school in Goleta last year. They followed Madison Picket from the softball field to the classroom.

Pickett is now a students at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, which happens to be the Alma mater of DPEA's top donor Virgil Elings.

Pickett  joined DPEA founder Amir Abo-Shaeer and his wife Emily at the White House this week. They spoke on a panel Monday at the 2nd annual White House Next Generation High School Summit.

The couple flew home just in time to introduce the documentary and to encourage people to tweet about it with the hashtag: #SchoolFuturePBS.

Amir Abo-Shaeer,  an expert in teaching physics,  admitted he only recently traded in his flip-phone for a smart phone.  Ano-Shaeer said he learned to tweet this week to help promote the NOVA program.
