Airport Delays In Santa Barbara And San Luis Obispo

Runway Construction At SFO The Cause

Airport Delays in Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - If you're traveling out of or into Santa Barbara's Airport, expect delays during the summer months.

A summer construction project at SFO, San Francisco's Airport, has two runways shut down for months.

And that's causing delays for airline passengers in Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo.

For Santa Barbara air travelers, United is the only airline with flights to San Francisco.

The work is part of a federally mandated Runway Safety Area (RSA) project that started in May.

Some travelers we talked to are taking the delays in stride, others aren't.

"Yesterday I was supposed to fly out of Santa Barbara to San Francisco and the flight was cancelled due to air traffic control issues," said Katherine Walker, who is traveling from Washington, DC. "I was supposed to work today so I had to get someone to cover my shift. I was looking forward to getting home last night and it didn't happen," she said.

"You need runways for planes to land on," New Jersey resident Stephen Seidel told NewsChannel 3. "So if it means a safer flight, I can deal with the delay," he said.

The majority of delays are expected between 9:00 a.m. and noon, in good weather.

Work on San Francisco's runways is expected to last through September.
