SANTA BARBARA COUNTY, Calif. -

Local law enforcement in Santa Barbara county is taking on a different kind of training. It's not on shooting guns or defense tactics, but for the first time officers are learning techniques on how to better communicate with people who have autism.

This training helps officers identify the characteristics of the developmental disorder, so that they can better handle situations. Autism effects 1 in 88 people,  a 23-percent increase since 2009, mainly due to the way individuals are diagnosed.
