Asian small-clawed otters born at Santa Barbara Zoo

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Asian small-clawed otter pups were born at the Santa Barbara Zoo on Saturday, October 7th.

It is the smallest otter species in the world-- fully grown at only 2 feet long and weigh under 10 pounds.

After a gestation period of only 68 days, the mother will remain in the nesting box with the new pups.

The last time these type of otters were at the zoo was in 2011. Right now the pups are being kept behind the scenes at the zoo while they grow.

They should be ready for the public to view by January.

Asian small-clawed otters are not on the endangered list but their species is threatened by palm oil farming, hunting and pollution.
