SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Going to the grocery story could be a thing of the past. A new app now does all the work for you. It's known as Instacart.
"The app is very convenient, said Instacart customer Lexie Quintana. "All I do is pull it up and choose a grocery store I want then choose the items I want, and choose a delivery slot. Some are available as soon as an hour."
Instacart launched in the Santa Barbara area on Thursday. Ventura County has had their delivery service up and running since last month while San Luis Obispo will start up next week. Costumers will be able to purchase items at Vons, Smart & Final, CVS, Petco and Costco, which Instacart customers will not need a membership for.
The delivery area will cover over 74K households and is bringing income
earning opportunities to the area with plans to bring on more than 100 new
shoppers. Areas of service include Santa Barbara, Santa Maria, Mission
Canyon, Goleta, Isla Vista, Gaviota, Capitan, Hope Ranch, Summerland,
Montecito, Toro Canyon and Carpinteria.
"It's actually giving back to the busy mom," said Instacart manager Judith Bonilla. "Stay home with your child. We also have the professionals that don't have time to go food shopping."
This service isn't only benefiting the customers. It's also creating local jobs. Instacart plans on hiring nearly 100 drivers.
"I'm a student so it allows me to work around my class hours," said Gauray Maken, Instacart shopper. "It also just helps me pay the bills and it's a nice little side income."
The service also includes alcohol. And even better news Instacart cost is only $5.99 for orders of $35 or more.
