SANTA MARIA, Calif. -

Four adults and two children were able to escape safely after their home catches fire Monday afternoon.

Firefighters were called out to the 1000 block of West Stowell at about 3:15p.m. Officials with the Santa Maria Fire Department say when crews arrived they saw thick black smoke coming from the garage, which eventually spread to part of the home.

The six people living in the home were able to get out without any injuries.

"It's just unfortunate. One of the things that we always recommend is homes have active working smoke detectors. At this time, it does not appear the smoke detectors were working or active," says Battalion Chief Ed Hadfield, Santa Maria Fire Department.

The Red Cross is assisting to help the victims find a place to stay. Fire officials estimate the damage at $60,000. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
