SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -

NewsChannel 3 spoke with Richard Martinez Sunday afternoon after he had a private, one-on-one discussion with the father of the Isla Vista gunman.

Martinez is the father of Christopher Michaels-Martinez who was gunned down a week ago Friday in the I.V. Delimart.

Martinez said he met earlier in the day with Peter Rodger, the father of the 22-year-old gunman, in a Santa Barbara coffee shop and said while he wouldn't reveal all that was expressed confidentially between the two men, he was willing to dictate a statement over the phone.

"I have met with Peter Rodger and we plan to work together so other families such as ours will not suffer as ours have," Martinez said. "This was a private conversation between grieving fathers who've reached common ground."

Martinez did confide that he wears the watch his son used to wear, as well as the purple band given to him at the UCSB memorial by Sean Marshall, a Santa Barbara mother who lost her two children to gun violence last year.

The rubber wrist band has the names of Marshall's children, Macaila and Alex, stamped on the front.
