SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -

A male giant anteater was born earlier this month at the Santa Barbara Zoo.

Though part of a twin birth, his sister past away. The cause of the female death is not yet known. Zookeepers say the prognosis for the unnamed anteater is good, but  guarded.

This is the first birth of this species at the zoo. He weighed 3.5 pounds when he was born. The pup is being hand raised by zookeepers, and is being fed formula from a milk bottle.

This is the first birth of a giant anteater at the Santa Barbara Zoo since 2006.
