SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -

Protesters want to the city of Santa Barbara to stop pursuing a gang injunction. About 200 members of Poder, the Youth Justice Coalition and other groups marched from the courthouse to the first city council meeting of the year Tuesday.

An injunction would work like a restraining order to ban notified gang members from associating in designated safety zones. The injunction wasn't on the council's agenda, but the council agreed to listen to hours of public comments. Cathy Murrillo and newly-elected Gregg Hart are the only council members who have spoken out against a gang injunction. The rest of the council wants to see a court judge rule on the matter.

A motion for a preliminary injunction will be heard later this month, followed by a permanent injunction trial scheduled in March.
