SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -

For many students, a school lunch is the only guaranteed meal of the day.

Monday through Friday until August 8, students 18 and under can get free breakfast and lunch.

Hundreds of hungry kids got fed Monday at lunchtime. One thing they didn't have to worry about is how to pay for the meal.

Many of the families in the community don't know where their next meal will come from. Some of that worry is passed on to the children.

"We have to pay rent and sometimes we have to go to my aunt's house and eat dinner with her. It's sometimes a struggle for us," said America Lopez.

Lopez, 11, is glad she can get food from the Santa Barbara Unified School District.

The free breakfast and lunch program food trucks travel to where the community needs it. On Monday, kids filled up on organic turkey dogs, salad and grapes.

"Franklin Elementary is nestled in one of those perfect neighborhoods that will hopefully see a lot of kids that really need a good breakfast and need a good lunch," said Nancy Weiss, the director of food service.

At five different locations throughout the city, 2,000 students will be fed each day.

The money for the meals comes from state and federal subsidies. The school district is given $3.25 per meal which covers the cost for food and staffing.

"I feel really happy that they pay for this food and we don't have to pay anymore," said Angelina Lopez.

The 9-year-old said she worries about getting food at least once a day.

"It makes me feel sad because I know how it feels because a lot of people don't have enough money," said 11-year-old Evelyn Zavaleta.

But for the fourth year in a row, one thing is for certain this summer. Now until August 8, kids in Santa Barbara can get breakfast and lunch for free.

"Our goal is to deliver just the best wholesome food to kids and where you see a child walking away satisfied, knowing that he just filled up on food that's good for his body and good for his mind, makes me happy to know that the future is in better hands with kids who are well fed," said Weiss.
