Cate Blanchett Honored In Santa Barbara

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Cate Blanchett has been named the 2014 Santa Barbara International Film Festival's "Outstanding Performer of the Year."

Hundreds of fans crowded around the Arlington Theater to catch a glimpse of Blanchett as she walked the red carpet Saturday night.

"To be singled out in this way, it is pretty remarkable," Blanchett said.

"This is my second time here and its fantastic.  I think festivals really come alive in a small community because it can take over the whole city, and looking here tonight it is definitely doing that.  It is great," said Blanchett.

The festival is honoring Blanchett for her performance in "Blue Jasmine.:  While on the red carpet, Blanchett told NewsChannel 3 what it was like to play the role.  "It was very intense and terrifying in a lot of ways because it was so impeccably written.  It felt like a real gift.  You don't want to screw it up, but there was so much to do because she is on a cocktail of drugs and alcohol and she is mentally very fragile and then you have to serve (film director) Woody Allen's language, and then make sure you connect with the other actors.  Then once you step on set, there is no time for those nerves and there is actually a strange perverse pleasure in it."

Blanchett has already received the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Drama for her work in "Blue Jasmine."  Her role of Jasmine has also snagged her an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress in a Leading Roll.

Long-time Blanchett fans say it was a true honor to meet her in person.  "It's surreal.  I couldn't believe my luck.  It is something to remember for the rest of my life," said Blanchett fan Beatriz Pacheca.
