ISLA VISTA, Calif. -

The news of the Isla Vista mass murders last Friday night has not been shielded from the children at the nearby elementary school. Many knew about it.  Many heard the sirens. Many had worries all weekend.

But the campus has empowered the children to help the older kids who were in the line of fire and are visibly upset these days.

Special paper hearts have been hand made and colored in by the school kids.   Principal Mary Kahn said it was a way for the children to express their feelings after the tragedy and also help others.

The hearts are now on the windows of local businesses -starting with the I.V. deli where Christopher Martinez lost his life.

Some of the hearts have special "extra" handwritten messages.

One was a Winnie the Pooh quote that hits home when many people read it.  The quote is : "How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard."

Kahn says about 500 hearts have been made.
