Outdoor School devastated by Whittier...

SANTA BARBARA COUNTY, Calif. - The Outdoor School at Rancho Alegre was destroyed by the Whittier Fire on Saturday afternoon.

The evacuation went well, but some staff members who lived at the camp, lost everything in the fire.

Thousands of fifth and sixth graders from public schools in local counties stay at the camp during their final year of elementary school.

For many student, the experience is their first introduction to nature.

Santa Barbara Unified School District Board of Education President Kate Parker said the loss of the Outdoor School will hit the students hard.

She said they will cherish their memories of the 9 mile hike, Old Man Murphy and the programs offered by the naturalists.

"It is a wonderful program and I hope they rebuild soon and I know we will be working with them to get a program in place for our students here in Santa Barbara as soon as we can," said Parker.

The 213 acre camp is located on Highway 154 across from the Lake Cachuma.
