SANTA MARIA, Calif. -

A 3-month-old infant is in the care of Child Welfare Services following a suspected DUI traffic accident on Main Street in Santa Maria.

The Santa Maria Police Department says Carmelo Vasquez of Oxnard ran through a red light and hit a pickup truck around 8 p.m. Wednesday. Vasquez was driving 1996 Honda Accord with two passengers.

The infant was evaluated and released to Child Welfare Services. A 22-year-old female passenger was airlifted to a local hospital with moderate to severe injuries. No one else was injured in the accident.

According to police, Vasquez was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and child endangerment. He has been booked into Santa Barbara County Jail and is being held on $100,000 bail.
