Domestic assault turns into deadly weapon charge

VENTURA, Calif. - A domestic dispute turns into charges for a Ventura man.

Police responded to multiple 911 calls on Saturday at around midnight.   Several residents in the 9100 block of Neath Street had reported a man and woman fighting in the street, and that the man, Stephen Opferman, 26, of Ventura was holding a gun and had fired shots.

When police arrived they took Opferman into custody without incident.

During the course of the investigation police said they learned Opferman and his girlfriend had been physically fighting, he armed himself with a gun and then hit the victim in the head several times.

The loaded gun was found in the front yard, though no shots were actually fired from the gun, according to police. 

The victim sustained moderate injuries.

Opferman was arrested and booked on domestic violence and assault with a deadly weapon charges.
