OAK VIEW, Calif. -

A call about suspicious activity near the Girl Scout campground off Sulpher Mountain Road led to car chase in Oak View around 5:30 p.m. Friday.

The chase ended with gunfire at the end of Old Creek Road.

Capt. Don Aguilar said a man identified as Daniel Houfek, 42, of Ventura, got out of his car and pointed a gun at deputies, who opened fire.

Houfek died from his wounds.

One bullet put a hole through a side window at the office of Old Creek Ranch Winery.  No one there was injured.

The officers involved have been placed on paid leave while more than one agency investigates the shooting.
