VENTURA, Calif. - A Ventura man is behind bars after allegedly stabbing an employee at a Family Discount Store Sunday afternoon.
Police say 29-year-old Gilbert Ortiz of Ventura entered the discount store on the 100 block of Main Street at around 1:30 p.m.
The female clerk asked him to leave the store after she saw him selecting items from behind the front counter.
Ortiz allegedly lunged over the counter at the clerk, stabbing her with a knife, cutting her on the face and hand.
A male passerby confronted Ortiz, who then stabbed him in the neck and torso.
Ortiz fled on foot and was pursued by a security guard. Ortiz threatened to guard with the knife, leading the guard to stop following Ortiz.
Police obtained security footage and identified Ortiz as the suspect. Officers located Ortiz at a home on the 300 block of Olive Street later that day. He was arrested without incident.
Ortiz was booked into the Ventura County Pre-Trial Detention facility on complaints of of robbery, assault with a deadly weapon and brandishing a weapon.
The victims are expected to survive.
