Stolen pizza delivery car crashes during pursuit in Santa Barbara

Police: Alcohol, drugs may be involved

Santa Barbara Police chase a stolen Rusty's Pizza delivery car and catch a suspect on Sunday night.

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Police arrested a man identified as 27-year-old Christopher Roberts, a resident of Turlock, California, after a chase involving a stolen pizza delivery car Sunday night.

A Rusty's Pizza delivery car was stolen in the area of the 100 block of State Street at about 9:30 p.m. Santa Barbara police initiated a pursuit of the stolen car at Harbor and Shoreline Drive.

Officers lost the red pizza car near Meigs Road and Cliff Drive, but soon located it traveling down Carrillo Street. The suspect car crashed at the corner of W. Carrillo and W. Figueroa streets near San Andres street, before the suspect took off on foot.

With the help of a police K-9, officers located Roberts, and took him into custody at Shoreline Church located in the 900 block of San Andres Street.

It appears the suspect was injured in the incident, and was seen limping as he was being taken into custody. It's unclear if the reported injury was a result of the crash or a K-9 dog bite.

An eye witness helped police identity Roberts as the alleged car thief, according to investigators.

"The subject was taken into custody for a stolen vehicle and a felony pursuit". said Sgt. Todd Johnson of the Santa Barbara Police. Roberts is also charged with DUI, resisting arrest, and misdemeanor hit-and-run. Roberts' bail was set at $75,000.

Police are also investigating an assault and different attempted auto burglary case allegedly involving the same suspect.
