SLO man arrested after tense police,...

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - A San Luis Obispo man is behind bars after police responded to reports of a man yelling and running in the street near the 800 block of Alyssum Street then confronting him after shots were fired.

The incident occurred just before midnight May 17. Officers with the SLO Police Department heard several gunshots as they were looking for the suspect whom they later identified as 55-year-old Robert Torres of San Luis Obispo.

Officers requested help from the SLO County Sheriff's Office and the California Highway Patrol after isolating the area where the gunshots originated.

Several families from the neighborhood were evacuated. The SWAT team was called to the scene and successfully convinced the suspect to come out of the house.

However, after exiting the home, "Torres, was uncooperative in following Officer commands and less lethal rounds were deployed," said the SLO Police Department in a statement.

A Sheriff's K-9 unit made sure Torres was taken into custody. Torres was taken to Sierra Vista Hospital where he was treated for moderate injuries, according to SLO police.

Torres was booked into San Luis Obispo County Jail and charged with:

  • Discharge of a firearm at an inhabited dwelling
  • Arson
  • Felony vandalism
  • and Willful discharge of a firearm in a negligent manner

Police are asking anyone with information regarding this crime or recent suspicious activity involving Torres to call the SLO Police Department at 805-781-7312.
