Santa Paula police investigating homicide, shooting

Man killed by blunt force trauma

SANTA PAULA, Calif. - The Santa Paula Police Department is investigating the early morning murder of an 18-year-old Santa Paula man and the shooting of another man.

Santa Paula police responded to a report of shots fired on the 500 block of Sycamore Street at around 2 a.m. Sunday morning.

Officers located two men with major injuries at the scene.

One of those men was identified as Anthony Montiel, 18, of Santa Paula. Montiel was pronounced dead at the scene.

The second man, a 35-year-old Santa Paula resident, was suffering from two gun shot wounds. He was transported to Ventura County Medical Center where he is now listed in stable conditon.

On Monday, an autopsy was performed on Montiel and it was determined he had died from injuries caused by blunt force trauma.

Investigators determined that Montiel and the second man knew each other and possibly became involved in a physical altercation.

It's unknown who is responsible for the injuries to Montiel and the second man and it is unclear if any other suspects were involved in the altercation.

Police have not yet determined whether or not the incident was gang related although both men are believed to be gang members.

A firearm was recovered at the scene as well as other evidence possibly involved in this incident.

The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Supervisor Randy Haumann at (805) 525-4474 ext. 211. Anyone wishing to remain anonymous may submit a tip by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
