SANTA MARIA, Calif. - Many are struggling to understand the Monday night murder of a Santa Maria woman by her ex-husband who abducted their son and then was killed Tuesday in a shootout with LAPD.
The Morozov family tragedy is having a profound impact in the community and at Pine Grove Elementary School in Orcutt where 9 year old Daniel Morozov is a student.
The Orcutt Union School District sent out a letter to parents letting them know what was happening to Daniel and his family.
Counselors will be on campus at Pine Grove School throughout the week to speak with students or staff who need it.
"It's just a reminder that we have to continue to focus on meeting the needs of our students and our staff while maintaining safety, and that always remains the number one priority in the Orcutt Union School District," said OUSD Superintendent Deborah Blow.
Those who know Daniel's father Konstantin Morozov say he was a skilled at-home nurse from Ukraine who came to the United States with an advanced degree and worked at Marian Regional Medical Center in Santa Maria.
One of his recent clients is struggling to understand what's happened.
"I told my girlfriend, hey, that's the guy who took care of me, he's an excellent guy, he did an excellent job on my foot", Javier Romero said, "I've been in healthcare for over 25 years and he's a really competent person, he really knows his stuff, he really did a good job. He probably should have gone to counseling with the wife. I'm just in shock. Sad, this shouldn't have happened. You never, ever go out there and kill somebody."
It's unclear if Daniel Morozov, who is now in the custody of Child Protective Services, will return to Pine Grove School.
