Santa Maria man arrested for atttempting to attack victims with a machete

Possible charge for attempted murder

SANTA MARIA, Calif. - A Santa Maria man was arrested Saturday afternoon after police say he tried attack multiple people with a machete.

At around 3:30 p.m., Santa Maria police officers responded to the 800 block of West Raaberg for a report of an assault. 

When officers arrived they determined that a suspect reportedly attempted to strike multiple victims in the head and upper torso with a machete.

Santa Maria Police Department located the suspect's home, contained the residence and attempted to make contact with him.

When the suspect refused to come out of his home, officers enrolled the help of the Santa Maria Police Department's Crisis Negotiations Team to attempt to communicate with the suspect. A SWAT unit also responded to the scene.

The suspect eventually gave himself up to authorities just before 7:00 p.m. He was arrested without incident.

The suspect has been identified as Gilberto Navarro, 34, of Santa Maria. 

Navarro was booked into the Santa Barbara County Jail on possible charges for Attempted Murder and possession of methamphetamine.
