Santa Barbara man accused of attempting to kill woman he raped

MONTECITO, Calif. - A Santa Barbara man was arrested Friday after authorities say he raped a woman and then attempted to kill her.

The call came in Friday morning just before 7:30 a.m. in Montecito. The caller reported hearing a woman screaming for help while a man chased her with a knife.

Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Deputies arrived on scene and located Barret Paul Murphy, 49, of Santa Barbara. Murphy made contact with Montecito Fire personnel and was detained until deputies could determine what crime had occurred.

The victim told investigators that Murphy had broken into the her home, sexually assaulted her and attempted to kill her with the knife.

The victim was able to get away and flag down a vehicle for help. The driver of the vehicle took the victim to the Montecito Fire Station and she was later taken to the hospital.

Murphy was booked into the Santa Barbara County Jail and faces possible charges for attempted murder, kidnapping, rape by force, assault with intent for sexual assault, oral copulation, assault with a deadly weapon, burglary, and domestic violence.

His bail was set at $1,000,000.
