Residents stop fleeing DUI suspect

SANTA MARIA, Calif. - Neighborhood residents stopped a DUI suspect from fleeing after a traffic collision early Tuesday.

According to Santa Maria Police, officers responded to the area of Fesler Street and Mary Drive just after 1:30 a.m. Tuesday to a report of an intoxicated driver that crashed into a parked vehicle. After the collision, the driver got out of his damaged vehicle and tried to run away but was confronted by residents and physically restrained until officers arrived.

Officers were then able to arrest the driver who has been identified as 27-year-old Carlos Pena Sanchez of Santa Maria. An investigation revealed Sanchez was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.

Sanchez was arrested for DUl and booked into the Santa Barbara County Jail.
