VENTURA, Calif. - Ventura police arrested a suspected car thief after the victim called authorities to report he had seen his vehicle parked in the area of Monmouth Drive and Harbor Boulevard a day after it was stolen.
Officers said the victim left a backpack unattended with his keys and other belongings while he exercised at State Beach Park located at 901 San Pedro Street on August 18. When he returned he noticed his keys had been stolen and later realized his vehicle had also been taken.
On August 19, the victim found his car parked near Monmouth Drive and Harbor Boulevard. As officers were responding to the scene, the suspect, Jamar Smith, 36, of Ventura left the area and drove north on Habor Boulevard as the victim followed.
Smith eventually pulled into a public parking lot where officers conducted a high-risk stop and took Smith into custody.
The Ventura Police Department said the victim's belongings were found inside the car Smith was driving along with other evidence linking him to the theft.
Smith was booked into the Ventura County Jail for theft of a vehicle, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and receiving stolen property.
