Panga smuggling boat found on Santa Barbara County beach

Authorities believe boat used to smuggle drugs

SANTA BARBARA COUNTY, Calif. - A panga boat believed to have been used to smuggle drugs into Santa Barbara County was found by law enforcement Wednesday morning on a beach west of El Capitan State Beach.

Santa Barbara County State Parks personnel discovered the 28-foot-long boat abandoned on Arroyo Quemada Beach at about 10:45 a.m. Ten barrels of fuel equaling approximately 170 gallons of fuel were found onboard the boat along with clothing strewn around the area, according to Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Spokesperson Kelly Hoover.

Personnel with the Sheriff's Office, U.S. Coast Guard, Department of Homeland Security, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection responded to the scene but did not locate any suspects or drugs.

Homeland Security agents took possession of the boat.
