GOLETA, Calif. - Authorities are searching for a man they say attempted to lure a 13-year-old Goleta Valley Junior High School student Wednesday afternoon by using several tactics that included statements.
The Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office says that the 13-year-old girl was walking on Shirrell Way near the Fairview Shopping Center in Goleta when she was approached by a white male suspect driving a black pickup truck at about 3:40 p.m.
The student did not fall for the suspect's tactics, according to the Sheriff's Office, and never got into his car but rather, reported the incident immediately.
The suspect is described as a white male in his 40's with blonde hair, bluish eyes and grey mustache. He was driving a black pickup truck, possibly a Ford, with damage to the rear end, and a hanging brake light.
Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the Sheriff's Criminal Investigations Division at 805-681-4150. Anyone wishing to remain anonymous may call 805-681-4171.
The Sheriff's Office reminds parents to teach their children to avoid walking alone and to never approach a vehicle or go near a car with someone in it. Parents are also reminded to let their children know they should never get into a car without your permission. Adults usually don't ask children for directions.
Authorities also say parents should teach their kids whose car they are allowed to ride in and that they should not listen to instructions that someone told them for you to pick them up. If you see something, say something.
