Man gets 85 years to life for arson, murder of Grover Beach resident in 2016

GROVER BEACH, Calif. - The man responsible for the death of a 37-year-old Grover Beach resident in July 2016 was found guilty of first-degree murder and arson by a San Luis Obispo County jury on Wednesday.

Manuel Jesus Perez, 43, was sentenced to 85 years to life for the death of Joseph Charles Kienly IV.

Perez was arrested soon after police began investigating the discovery of Kienly's body inside a home that had caught on fire in the 100 block of North 13th Street in Grover Beach.

The appearance inside the home led investigators to believe Kienly died from an unnatural death and focused their resources on investigating the case as a homicide.

It's still unclear what led Perez to kill Kienly on July 11, 2016.
