Man arrested for attempting to steal items from Ventura elementary school

VENTURA, Calif. - A man was arrested after police say he entered an elementary school and stole property Thursday morning in Ventura.

At around 7:40 a.m., an employee at Poinsettia Elementary School at 350 N. Victoria Ave. saw a man in the auditorium of the school with school property in his possession. 

When the employee confronted him, the man left the area on foot with the items.

The employee contacted police and the suspect was detained a short distance away from the scene.

The suspect has been identified as Jason Sevier, 35. According to a press release from the Ventura Police Department, Sevier is a vagrant.

Sevier was found with money and property stolen from students and the school. Police say he also had a syringe loaded with heroin on his person.

Sevier was arrested and booked into the Ventura County Jail on suspicion of commercial burglary and possession of narcotics.
