Isla Vista resident arrested for alleged hate crime

ISLA VISTA, Calif. - Authorities arrested 19-year-old Isla Vista resident Daniel Joseph Garcia in connection to a hate crime on April 15 near U.S. Highway 101 and Refugio State Beach.

The victim, a 63-year-old Santa Paula resident had been attacked with a guitar because the suspect thought the victim was homosexual, according to the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office.

Garcia allegedly shouted a homophobic slur during the attack in which the victim suffered a traumatic injury requiring medical attention.

Deputies later learned that several hours after the attack, Garcia was arrested by the California Highway Patrol in Monterey County for an unrelated assault with a deadly weapon incident and for driving under the influence.

Garcia will be extradited to Santa Barbara County to face charged after the deposition of his Monterey County charges.
