Grover Beach police officer injured during arrest of armed felon

GROVER BEACH, Calif. - An Oceano man is facing several criminal felony charges following a physical fight with Grover Beach police officers.

The incident occurred in the 200 block of Ramona Avenue in Grover Beach just before 4 a.m. on August 22.

Officers with the Grover Beach Police Department were dispatched to investigate a report of someone trespassing on private property and a possible argument between two other men. 

The Grover Beach Police Department said his officers contacted three men at the scene and identified 35-year-old Rudy Jesse Perez Jr. of Grover Beach as the individual attempting to enter private property and involved in a physical argument. He was arrested for having an outstanding warrant and booked into San Luis Obispo County Jail.

The officers also turned their attention to 19-year-old Gilbert Tyler Duran Hooper of Oceano for his reported involvement in the fight. Police department said Duran Hooper attempted to flee from officers but when he was unable to, "Duran Hooper engaged the officers in a physical altercation."

During the fight, officers discovered Duran Hooper was in possession of a Glock handgun tucked into his wristband, according to the Grover Beach Police Department.

With the assistant of police officers from the Arroyo Grande Police Department, Duran Hooper was taken into custody and booked into San Luis Obispo County Jail for carrying a concealed firearm, being a felon in possession of a firearm, participating in a criminal street gang, resisting arrest, and battery on a police officer.

One officer was injured during the fight and treated on scene for minor injuries.
