Grover Beach Police Department names victim, officers involved in shooting

GROVER BEACH, Calif. - The Grover Beach Police Department has identified the man killed during an officer-involved shooting in the 1000 block of Brighton Avenue on July 13 as 58-year-old Grover Beach resident Kenneth Alan Eustace.

The department has also named the two officers involved in the shooting as Sgt. Juan Leon and Officer Matthew Monteiro. Leon is an 18-year law enforcement veteran with the Grover Beach Police Department. Monteiro has been with the department for 17 months.

Both officers remain on paid administrative leave while the investigation is ongoing.

The Officers were initially dispatched to the Grover Beach home on Wednesday, July 12 shortly before 10:30 p.m. for reports of a man causing a disturbance.

When they arrived on scene, the officers approached Eustace who police said was holding a large blunt object. Authorities said Eustace became argumentative and combative with the officers and was eventually tased but the taser reportedly had no effect.

Police said Eustace continued to threaten the officers and charged at them with the weapon, and that's when an officer-involved shooting occurred.

Eustace was pronounced dead at the scene. The officers were not hurt.
