GOLETA, Calif. - The Ellwood Elementary School community experienced tensed moments Wednesday morning when the school was placed on lockdown after a transient locked himself in one of the school bathrooms.
The Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office says 33-year-old Sidney Aldana walked into the school office at about 10:50 a.m. carrying a backpack and asked for help. He then "made a suicidal statement and locked himself in the office bathroom," said Sheriff's spokesperson Kelly Hoover.
School officials placed the school on lockdown and called the police. Sheriff's deputies were able to talk Aldana into coming out of the bathroom and giving himself up, according to authorities. He was taken into custody and booked at the Santa Barbara County Jail for an outstanding warrant out of Ventura County for failing to appear in court on a petty theft charge.
Aldana is being held on $7,500 bail.
Deputies searched Aldana's backpack and discovered drug paraphernalia, the Sheriff's Office said.
Hoover says mental health services will be provided to Aldana while he remains in police custody. The school was on lockdown for about 20 minutes.
