SANTA BARBARA COUNTY, Calif. - Santa Barbara resident Christopher Scott, 58, was arrested for DUI following a crash on Highway 154 on August 6 that resulted in his car plunging approximately 300 feet over the side and severely injuring his passenger.
The crash happened on Highway 154 east of Painted Cave at about 2 p.m. Scott and his passenger, 50-year-old Mary Scott of Santa Barbara who goes by the alias Cheryl, suffered major injuries in the crash. Authorities said she suffered head trauma. Both were trapped inside the car until emergency crews arrived and were able to extricate them.
Both crash victims were taken to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital where they remain. Scott is listed in critical condition with internal injuries as of Monday morning. The passenger remains in critical condition as well.
The California Highway Patrol said Scott made an unsafe turning movement in his 2015 Toyota as he was traveling eastbound on Highway 154. As a result, the car collided with an asphalt curb and overturned down a dirt hill before coming to rest on its wheels.
The crash remains under investigation.
