Car theft caught on surveillance video in Santa Barbara

Driver regrets leaving keys in the car

Volvo stolen after keys are left...

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - A construction worker working on the new Rosewood Miramar Beach hotel in Montecito said he won't be leaving his keys in the car anymore.

Jaren Unfried, of Santa Maria, said he left his keys and phone in his car while stopping to get a drink at the Stop 'n Shop on El Sueno Road in Santa Barbara on Wednesday afternoon around 3:30 p.m.

That's when surveillance video shows a woman watching him get out of the car.

As soon as he goes into the store, the video shows the woman getting into his white Volvo and taking off.

The owner of the shop recognized the woman as someone who had borrowed his landline phone after getting out of Santa Barbara County Jail earlier in the day.

Unfriend had trouble answering a California Highway Patrol officer's questions because he didn't know the license plate number of the car that is registered to his girlfriend.

"I left my keys in my car, I do it all the time, run in real quick somewhere, you wouldn't think here in Santa Barbara someone is gonna steal your car. I guess it is my fault. I should be kicking myself for doing it," Unfriend said.

He said he was anxious to get home to his girlfriend and their baby and borrowed a phone to rent a car.

The California Highway Patrol urges anyone with information to give them a call.

Unfriend has to be back at work at the Miramar by dawn.
