Arson and illegal fireworks run amok in Isla Vista during power outage

Thomas Fire caused county-wide power outages

ISLA VISTA, Calif. - The Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office is investigating illegal fireworks and acts of arson during the power outages in Isla Vista Monday night.

It happened around 10 p.m. near Del Playa Drive between Camino Pescadero and Camino Del Sur.

An unknown number of people started setting off illegal fireworks. The Sheriff's Office says mortar style fireworks were set off over the ocean and Del Playa Drive while cinder cone fireworks were being set off at intersections of residential areas. This attracted thousands of people to the fireworks display.

The same people who set off the fireworks then started to set two couches, a chair and a dumpster on fire.

Gasoline was used as an accelerant in one of the fires, according to the sheriff's department.

No one was injured during the incidents, but this call prevented deputies from responding to important calls.

Deputies would like to remind the public that first responders have been extremely busy because of the Thomas Fire.
