President Barack Obama announced on Monday a one-day extension to the federal health care enrollment deadline.  However that extension does not apply for us in California.

For those who do want insurance through Covered California, December 23rd is still the deadline to be covered starting Jan. 1.  If you do not enroll by Monday night, you still can enroll online between now and March 31 for Covered California insurance without paying a penalty fee for lack of coverage.

"The importance of the deadline is so people can be eligible right away at the start of the New Year.  If they don't get in today they will be pushed back into the later part of January," said Dana Gamble of the Santa Barbara County public health department.

As of Dec. 1, more than 110,000 Californians had enrolled through Covered California.  That number is much higher now.  On Monday alone, more than 20,000 Californians enrolled through the website.
