SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -

Supporters of gang injunctions in Lompoc and Oxnard believe they have curbed gang crimes. They call them a prevention tool.

But opponents wonder if they are worth the cost. They consider injunctions that impose curfews and limit associating with others served by the injunction a violation of civil rights.

Santa Barbara City Council member Dal Francisco expects a court to determine whether Santa Barbara can legally implement an injunction on the lower east and west sides and along the beach by the end of the year.

Council member Cathy Murillo is encouraging everyone to voice their concerns about the implementation of an injunction at a community discussion this Saturday.

The Pro-Youth Movement is organizing the event on Saturday from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church, at 1500 State St.
