OXNARD, Calif. -

People wanting to apply for new, affordable housing in Oxnard can turn in applications for the Wagon Wheel Family Apartments starting next week.

The Wagon Wheel Family Apartments are at the site of the former Wagon Wheel Park. The 119 affordable apartments are phase one of the massive project.  The Wagon Wheel Project is being constructed on the 63-acre former Wagon Wheel motel and restaurant.  It calls for 1,500 residential units, more than 50,000 square feet of commercial space, and seven acres of parks and open space.

The affordable apartments feature stacked washers/dryers, dishwashers, refrigerators, microwaves, gas stoves, heating and air conditioning, as well as private balconies.

The demand for the affordable housing apartments is already surpassing expectations. "We have had over 1,800 people and we still have people coming in to collect applications.  So for 119 units for 1,800 people -- that's a lot," said CEDC Compliance Specialist Angelica Magana.

"There is always a greater demand than the available supply for more affordable housing for our working families in Ventura County," said CEDC Project Manager Bernardo Perez.

First dibs on the popular housing complex will go to the 100 or so families who currently live at the Wagon Wheel Trailer Lodge.  Their homes will be demolished to make room for the Wagon Wheel Project.  The rest of the apartments will be available to low-income individuals and families that qualify.

Applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis starting on Saturday, April 19.  For more information go to Cabrillo Economic Development Corporation's website or call 805-659-3791 ext. 101.
