SANTA PAULA, Calif. - LATEST UPDATE
The Ventura Police Department has released details into the investigation of a fatal crash in Santa Paula late Tuesday night.
Investigators say the Ventura Police Command Center received a 911 call at about 11:30 p.m. reporting an intoxicated person fighting in the parking lot of Circle K in the 11000 block of Citrus Drive near Saticoy. Police say the suspect, identified as a 36-year-old Santa Paula resident, hit a person in the face unprovoked, which led to the fight.
Police say an officer interviewing the victim in the parking lot saw the 36-year-old suspect hit a parked car before fleeing the scene northbound on Wells Road.
The officer immediately gave chase but lost sight of the suspect vehicle as it turned east on Foothill Road. It wasn't until the officer drove east on Foothill Road, when he saw the aftermath of a single-car crash near Foothill and Aliso Canyon Road.
The 36-year-old driver, whose name has not been released, was ejected from the car and died from his injuries, according to the Ventura Police Department. A woman passenger was trapped inside the car and had to be extricated by Ventura City firefighters. She was taken to Ventura County Medical Center and is listed in stable condition.

The California Highway Patrol website log says the single vehicle accident happened around 11:45 p.m. Tuesday. The car reportedly going off the road and rolling over at Foothill Road and Aliso Canyon Road. Police may have been in pursuit of the vehicle, but that has not been confirmed.
Two people were inside. One died at the scene the other had to be cut from the vehicle, according to the Ventura County Fire Department. That person was taken to the hospital. Their injuries are unknown.
During the crash power or telecommunications poles were damaged. Foothill Road from Wells Road to Aliso Canyon remains closed for repairs.
