Santa Barbara County Sheriff's candidates forum

GOLETA, Calif. - Santa Barbara County Sheriff candidates squared-off at a candidates forum Wednesday night.

The nonpartisan League of Women Voters hosted the forum at the Goleta Community Center. League members asked the first question about Deltopia, the unsanctioned party that sparked a riot in Isla Vista near the UCSB campus this month.

Incumbent Sheriff Bill Brown and his challenger Sgt. Sandra Brown see the handling of the riot differently.

Sgt. Brown said the Deltopia response shows the decay in the law enforcement agency and poor planning.

Sheriff Brown disagreed,  calling his officer's response prompt, restrained and courageous. The Sheriff  blamed social media for the record-crowd.

The candidates can agree on one thing. the county's next sheriff will be named Brown.

May 19 is the deadline to register to vote on election day, June 3.
