SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - A document obtained by The Associated Press shows Pope Benedict defrocked nearly 400 priests in 2011 and 2012 for molesting children. That's more than twice the number of priests removed several years before.
Benedict stepped down in 2013 and under Pope Francis, the Vatican prepared the information to defend the church before a United Nations committee in Geneva this week.
Former Oxnard police officer Manny Vega was abused when he was an altar boy between the ages of 10 and 15 by father Fidencio Silva. Vega, who is now a married businessman with children, wants the entire truth to come out and he wants Catholic Church higher-ups, including retired Cardinal Roger Mahoney, to be held accountable as well.
The Catholic Church used to have its own procedures to deal with priests accused of sex abuse. Bishops would move problem priests to new parishes rather than turn them over to the police.
Since a landmark settlement between the church and sex abuse victims in 2007 the the number of people who have come forward claiming abuse by priests has soared
