Oxnard Council Passes Power Plant Moratorium

OXNARD, Calif. - Another battle is brewing over power plants in Oxnard, a city that is home to three beachfront power plants and a Superfund site.

The Oxnard City Council unanimously approved a 45-day moratorium banning  more power plants along the beach.

The city has two gas-fired electrical power plants owned by NRG and a peaker plant owned by Southern Cal Edison.

NRG held a public meeting in Oxnard Tuesday to talk about building a new plant at Mandalay Beach off Harbor Boulevard with a promise to eventually pay to demolish the old one on the site.

But older plants were already slated for retirement and many locals want to keep it that way.
