County Fire Truck Blamed For Crash

Goleta, Calif. - A Santa Barbara County Sheriff's investigation found fault with a county fire truck driver during an investigation into a head-on collision in Goleta on June 1.

The accident happened after the fire engine turned off its siren and flashing lights following a canceled call for service.

The engine was attempting to make a left turn onto Valdez Avenue when it crashed into a Mercedes sports car traveling north of Calle Real.

The Mercedes driver, an 18-year old women from Isla Vista, was not injured but her car was totaled.

The fire truck was only dented.

Fire officials said the driver would have to take a risk management class.

Capt. David Sedecki also said the department would use the rare incident as a learning tool.
