SACRAMENTO, Calif. -

A Central Coast lawmaker and Santa Barbara County's district attorney are trying to close an obscure state law on rape.

Assemblyman Katcho Achadjian says he was outraged after a California court of appeals recently overturned a rape conviction for a man because the woman he attacked was not married.

The panel based its decision on a law stemming from 1872.

Achadjian introduced a bill back in 2011 extending the rape law to cover unmarried women after a similar case in Santa Barbara.

His bill will receive its first legislative committee hearing in Sacramento Tuesday at 9 a.m.

District Attorney Joyce Dudley is also in Sacramento Tuesday morning urging lawmakers to pass the bill.
